HEAR/HEAR: Double Bill!
I’ve been doing HEAR/HEAR since 2010, a bi-monthly reading series to showcase socially conscious writers in Toronto. HEAR/HEAR has evolved and changed shape but this September is going to be a milestone. In honour of National Literacy Month and in partnership with 100 Thousand Poets for Change, NOW HEAR THIS presents HEAR/HEAR: Double Bill.
So now I’m stuck hosting two events. Lucky me!
SHOW #1: HEAR/HEAR 19
The ninteenth show. Nineteenth! HEAR/HEAR (Wednesday September 26, 6:30pm) 19 fuses literature, music, performance and social activism together as a means to celebrate and support young people. This pay-what-you-can event takes place at The Supermarket (268 Augusta Ave) at 6:30pm, featuring hip-hop artist and youth worker Jaydahmann, filmmaker and poet Nayani Thiyagarajah and singer-songwriter James from the Songs. Plus the stage will be open to young poets, some who never touched the mic before.
Plus we’ll be having our regular (but not so regular!) raffle with some wicked prizes. And we’ll be opening up the mic for our live community board: a positive environment and share what’s happening with you and your people. HEAR/HEAR encourages guests to bring flyers, bring your voice, and we’ll grant you 15 seconds on stage to (shamelessly) promote your community-based event!
SHOW # 2: HEAR/HEAR: Open Mic Done Right
Emphasis on the “done right”. HEAR/HEAR is opening up the microphone to public! HEAR/HEAR: Open Mic Done Right (Saturday, September 29, 6:00pm) is an opportunity for fresh, emerging and seasoned performers (poets, writers and acoustic musicians) to show off their talents! This all ages, first-come, first-serve open mic, starts at 6pm at The Creation Lab (720 Bathurst St, Suite 403). In partnership with 100 Thousand Poets for Change, “Open Mic Done Right” showcase artists addressing their interpretation of social, political and personal change. Show up at 6:00pm for early sign up to ensure a spot!
Light refreshments will be sold at the event. If you went to the HEAR/HEAR 19, you a ticket for free food (free food?!?!) for the open mic event.
BOTH events are PWYC (Pay-What-You-Can, $5 suggestions, donations welcome)
BOTH events are fundraisers for the creative writing workshops for Operation Springboard youth
BOTH events encourage young people (and all peoples) to express themselves
